““Why was America so kind and yet so cruel?” wrote Carlos Bulosan in America is in the Heart. Like Bulosan, my mother immigrated from the Philippines with dreams of a better life for her infant son and herself. She retired fter 36 years of physical and emotional laboring for others. backyard doors at sunset contemplates how one reflects and takes stock of one’s life. How we (re)evaluate past choices may shift between a sunrise and sunset, when we are compelled to stand in the stillness and space offered by a break from what was once daily routine.
