JOY EVERY – BIO
Joy Every lives and works in Oakland, CA and is a nationally recognized, award-winning artist whose work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States. She has a BA in visual arts from UCSD and an MFA from Columbia University. Her work can be found in the collection of the Security and Exchange Commission and the American Embassy in Lima, Peru among other private collections. Joy works in painting, mixed media and photography.

Joy describes her work as using various media to express her inspiration by all aspects of naturelarge and small. She begins each work with a photographic snapshot, playing with concepts of time and memory. The resulting imagery emerges as an idealized or metaphorical version of the landscape and its elements - creating a sense of mystery and a story to tell.

Joy is represented by the Lori Austin Gallery in Healdsburg, CA and is a member of Gearbox
Gallery in Oakland, CA

JOY EVERY – ARTIST STATEMENT
When I work in mixed media, I start with a photographic image that sets a mood and captures a
moment in time. Without a preconceived notion of the finished artwork, I respond to that image
by playing with ways I can enhance it using collage, paint and embroidery to add color, line and
texture. “Rosy Ripples” (DiRosa Pond) was created by printing 2 copies of a photo I shot at the
DiRosa Museum in Sonoma County on a cloudy day. I placed the two photos next to each other
on thick paper to give the resulting image more expansiveness than had it been a single photo. I
then added embroidery to bring some color and texture to the photographs. The water was crying
out for ripples to suggest movement and the center line of embroidery emphasizes the juncture of
the two photos, a formal decision, rather than a conceptual one.
