I began working on my Sparkle painting series in 2018. They were inspired by what I experienced as I looked out the window, coming home on a train from Sacramento. I saw the sun beginning to set across the water. It was like sparkling bright jewels. I wanted to capture what I saw and what I felt in that liminal moment.

A couple of years later wildfires raged across the state, came dangerously close, and turned the sky orange – like something out of a science fiction movie. I imagined what the sparkle upon the water would look like under these skies – reflecting the orange. In the days that followed, I began manifesting the haunting images I had imagined.
