Seen and Heard : Carol F. Thomas : Those Were the Days

“Those Were the Days” is a photograph meant to evoke the nostalgia of childhood and how quickly that period of life passes. I rendered the image in antique sepia tones to emphasize that nostalgia. The baby shoes represent a brief moment in time and the fleeting nature of childhood, before the adversities of life intervene. I hope the image engages the viewer in thinking about their own emotions and experiences as a child, wanting a child, or parenting a child.

As an artist, my creativity manifests through photography. I use my camera to be in the moment and interpret the world as I see it. I take photographs to tell a story or highlight an emotion at a point in time. I look for underlying unity of patterns, shapes, color, or texture. As I initially capture an image and later in post-processing, my goal is to strip the scene of the non-essential elements to intensify the emotional impact for the viewer.
