“Briones Reservoir” reveals a sea of bright orange poppies in a green field during the height of spring lushness. The verdant scene seems almost unreal, and in this extreme we contemplate what is not pictured – the annual cycle in which dry seasons erase the preceding months’ growth before being refreshed by the rains winter and spring. The natural world breathes over many timescales, and for me the ephemeral celebrations of spring wildflowers are a favorite marker of these rhythms.
