Speaking Truth to Power

30"x21", mixed media on canvas

"Speaking Truth To Power" about the suppression of individual rights by the Supreme Court is also a mixed media piece drawing on artwork from a previous generation (Norman Rockwell's "Four Freedoms (1942) that was used to challenge Americans reluctance to fight Nazism.

This piece shows the extension of Supreme Court power to suppress individual rights and freedoms. The male citizen depicted is appropriated from Norman Rockwell's Four Freedoms paintings he did for the US government in 1942 to encourage Americans to support fighting fascism in WWII.

Artist Statement

I create political art that explores different types of cravings involving themes of sex, money and power, as demonstrated by the Trump administration and their various enablers including MAGA Republicans, institutional enablers as well as the Supreme Court. The Trump administration pursues these themes with determined focus and effectiveness and it is incumbent upon citizens to find ways to push back and challenge these actions. This is my obsession (if not craving) to document these political transgressions that are undermining our democratic ideals. Political art must be seen to have an effect and art shows are a prime vehicle to express these views.
