Artist Statement
Cacti and Stairs: As a visual artist, my eye was intrigued by the play of light going up the staircase, and in the courtyard and sky at Casa Aranguren, (built in 1937, in Guadalajara, Mexico). I love the challenge of painting light, and capturing the mood of a place. My heart longed to be there and explore, a craving to travel outside the known into the unknown, be it a physical place, or a feeling of curiosity and surrender.
The flow state of painting--when you are not aware of time passing, and are immersed in the feel of the brush on the canvas--provides me with a goal, and a gift, with each work I attempt. Capturing the subtle hues of light on an object to render it in three dimensions continues to fascinate, frustrate, and delight me. I crave artistic expression as a way to get outside of the conversation always running in my mind, and, as a means of learning and growing.
