ARTIST STATEMENT
I have always loved glass. Its effortless luminosity makes it a rewarding medium even for a beginning artist, but it's also rich with near-infinite possibilities for the artist who loves to learn and experiment.
Each morning I am filled with anticipation as the moment to open the kiln approaches. While experience and training help me control variables, including heat, time and gravity, there is no way to predict the results with perfect accuracy. The frisson between serendipity and control has kept me engaged with this work for the last fifteen years.
One of the qualities of glass that I enjoy the most is depth. Because the viewer can see through the transparent and tinted glass, the edges of the adjacent opaque shapes stand out in relief, so that even a piece that is smooth on the surface reveals countless facets and points of entry into the work.
When working with glass, the artist inevitably also works in at least one other medium: light. Light reflects, refracts, and diffuses upon contact with glass, depending on how the piece is constructed. Place a work of glass art on your wall or table, and watch in fascination as the work and its shadow subtly transform throughout the day.
