stained glass mosaic with ceramic elements, 21 x 21

I came to art later in life, without formal training and without a conventional creative background. My professional life was rooted in data analysis and systems thinking. Art entered my life through a personal spiritual awakening and gradually became my primary form of practice and expression. My work is grounded in attention, presence, and relationship—to animals, to nature, to memory, and to the inner life. Through stained glass mosaics and ceramic forms, I create pieces that hold meaning as well as beauty. They are designed to be lived with, returned to, and reflected upon over time. I work slowly and intuitively, learning through direct experience. My education has come through doing: cutting, shaping, assembling, listening, revising. Each piece teaches me how it wants to be made.

Light is an essential collaborator in my work. Glass gathers and transforms it, revealing subtle shifts throughout the day. These changes mirror the subtle inner shifts that occur when we slow down and pay attention.

For me, art is not separate from life. It is how I listen, remember, and remain connected to what matters most.

The Night Watcher explores the idea of luminosity through both material and meaning. The owl emerges from a deep blue night sky, her wings formed from iridescent glass that gathers and reflects light. As the light around the piece shifts, the glass changes subtly, allowing her to appear as if she is glowing from within.

Owls are creatures of darkness, able to see and move clearly in places where others cannot. In this piece, she represents the quiet inner light that helps guide us through uncertain or difficult times. The reflective qualities of glass mirror that experience—light appearing unexpectedly, even in the midst of shadow.

For me, luminosity is not simply brightness. It is the steady presence of awareness, resilience, and attention that continues to shine even when the world feels dim. The Night Watcher reflects that idea: a glow that does not come from outside illumination, but from something steady and alive within.

BIO

Alicia Taylor Low is a Berkeley-based mosaic and ceramic artist and founder of Down to Earth Mosaics. She began her artistic practice in midlife following a personal spiritual journey that led her away from a career in data analysis and into hands-on creative work.

Without formal art training, Alicia developed her skills through sustained studio practice, experimentation, and deep attention to process. Her work centers on stained glass mosaics, custom pet portraits, and symbolic ritual objects that explore themes of presence, memory, and connection.

Alicia approaches art as a form of reflective and spiritual practice. Each piece emerges through intuitive making, careful craftsmanship, and ongoing dialogue with materials.

Her work is held in private collections nationwide and is frequently commissioned as a lasting expression of love, remembrance, and relationship. In addition to her studio practice, Alicia shares her process through writing, teaching, and community engagement.
