The Southern escape route within the inner passages, is heavy with secrets, and stories that need to be known. One cannot escape noticing the beauty of nature, without remembering the dreams that were born, or died there. The shimmering presence of moonlit waves welcomes the disenfranchised to enter and find freedom.

The Combahee River is a short blackwater river in the southern Lowcountry region of South Carolina formed at the confluence of the Salkehatchie and Little Salkehatchie rivers near the Islandton community of Colleton County, South Carolina.

The river is embedded with ceremony and memories, in the presence of countless distant hopes, echoing their moments and a point of departure - where visions are transformed by the implications of intersecting histories, and cultural aesthetics.

The ancestors do not wait – they flow with the river that radiates and beckons with possibility and transgressive secrets. They are the hope of transformative love and life, and a glimpse of spirit, in the mind’s eye.

A tribute to Harriet Tubman who helped plan, lead and free more than 700 slaves in South Carolina, and whose final words were, “I go to prepare a place for you.”
