The boat, cradle or bowl has been a recurrent form throughout my career, varying in shape to reference its metaphorical or actual content, whether that be food, fuel, or as, in this case, river water. I was originally inspired to sculpt these pieces after watching Vietnamese “boat people” drifting on the Mekong River.
The boat image—and the shelter and protection that it implies—is very much part of the current public consciousness. Every day we are bombarded with disturbing images of refugees, displaced people fleeing or driven from their homes because of ethnic cleansing, poverty, and climate change. My intention is that “Drift,” hints at strength and survival as well.
