Re-Imagining Our Footprint: Gina Papen - To Make Art
To Make Art
6” x 6”,Paint on Wood, Ink
For the past 30 years, I have enjoyed re-configuring some of my art works into new formats.
I began with cutting up small drawings into 9 squares, and re-positioning them for
unexpected compositional challenges. These exercises developed over time to bigger
works, unified by acrylic paint and dark ink. Then I decided to collage over a figure study,
and it led to my doing a series of 20 of them in the 90’s and 2000’s.
It is a challenge to cut or tear works apart, and then put them back together in a way
that is more satisfying Sometimes a written word is a motivation or theme to work with.
I enjoy balancing light and dark areas within the structures for added interest.
