Aren't we all a Little Out of Breath: Glass, 21" x 21" x 4"

STATEMENT

Bridging the gap between art and craft, I use glass to produce contemporary art informed by socio-political concepts. My work asks the viewer to question the borders of art and obscenity, to rethink self-objectification, and to support the reclaiming of the eroticized. It investigates the intimate space between beauty and ugliness. My work examines how effective ugliness has the power to subvert, and, as such, is often the territory of the radical, it has the power to transform, to shift opinion and shape taste. 

The work attempts a balance between the objective and subjective perspectives, between Ugliness and beauty, familiarity and estrangement, between intimacy and sexuality. The viewer is invited to reflect on the ways in which these opposing but equal elements are intimately interrelated yet stand in contrast to one another in our daily lives. 

BIO

Patricia Ludovici was born in Philadelphia where she began experimenting with glass and 3D art at the early age of 13 in a hot glass shop just outside of the city. She then went on to receive her BFA in glass at the California College of Arts and Crafts. After graduation She worked for a number of years with various glass artists, in and around the bay area California, most notably the glass caster Clifford Rainy. She lived and worked in Berlin, Germany for the 3 years pursuing her art. In 2012 she was awarded an artist in residence at Berlin Glas e.V. Berlin’s first hot glass studio. She holds a master’s degree in 3D from San Jose state. She has shown her work in and around the Bay Area and Portland as well as in Berlin, Germany. In 2018 she was awarded The Gail Fullerton Endowment and the Elizabeth Heil Scholarship.
